Terrorist Go Global Using the Internet

Global terrorism in the 21st century has evolved into a complex and ever-changing phenomenon.  Discourses about terrorism now encompass many subjects, such as counterterrorism, ethno-political and resource wars, biological and chemical warfare, homeland defense, nonproliferation treaties, and weapons of mass destruction.  The internet has become an important tool for both counter-terrorism resources and terrorist organizations, providing valuable information about the state of the world around us. Here we highlight a few of the available resources out there on the World Wide Web.

Global Incident Map
http://www.globalincidentmap.com/home.php
This site provides a real-time global map of terrorist and other suspicious events.  Clicking on an event icon will generate a full event description and a link to one or more news articles on the event.  This is an excellent resource for someone who wants to stay on top of what’s going on in the world.

The SITE Institute
http://siteinstitute.org/index.html
The SITE Institute is a research organization that penetrates terrorist organization websites and collects and translates information found there.  Of particular interest is their terrorism library, which provides background information on designated foreign terrorist organizations.  The multimedia page is also a great feature, providing video clips of terrorist speeches and events of interest.

Hizbullah English Website
http://www.moqawama.org/english/index.php
Hizbullah’s website provides a sophisticated look at the party’s ideologies, parliamentary activities, and leadership.  The sections on martyrs and hostages afford remarkable insight into the mindset of Hizbullah’s leaders.  This site presents a significant opportunity to understand the attitude of a terrorist organization.
