Smallpox Exercise Program Development Continues

Plans are well underway to field test the Smallpox exercises in the St. Louis metropolitan region in late October. The Institute exercise development team will customize elements of the script to facilitate its use in an exercise that will involve regional hospitals, health departments and the regional MMRS system. Two separate exercises will be held on the live exercise day: the first will occur in the City of St. Louis, and will focus on response in an urban setting. A parallel exercise will take place in Illinois, and it will have a more rural focus.

As a related reminder, the Institute's Bioterrorism Exercise Development team will make available a smallpox tabletop exercise, originally developed for the State of Iowa Bioterrorism Training Program at no cost to any health department or public safety agency requesting it. The exercise has been redesigned so that it is most appropriate for rurally-based organizations needing an exercise to test a smallpox plan.
