Bill Stanhope, MS, PA

Dr. Rachel Schwartz

Prior to joining the Institute of Biosecurity at Saint Louis University in 2003  Bill Stanhope had been  the Acting Dean of the College of Health Sciences and founding director of the Institute for Bioterrorism Defense at Touro University in Vallejo California.

His course work and research activities revolve around the historical consequences of epidemics, biosecurity risk assessment. and the confluence of public health and intelligence His BSDP elective course  in Medical and Public Health Intelligence is the first of its kind for the civilian preparedness community. Since joining the Institute he has focused his research on non pharmacological interventions for pandemic control and the historic use of social distancing and quarantine policies during the 1918-19 Influenza pandemic. 

While on a leave of absence from the University of Oklahoma in 1978 he became involved in national biosecurity issues when, as a National Academy of Sciences Health Policy Fellow, he directed a comprehensive study of military medical preparedness and the Soviet threat of chemical and biological weapons. He returned to the University of Oklahoma in 1980, established a division of Disaster Medicine and worked with the OU medical school’s basic scientists to develop better antidotes to Warsaw Pact nerve agents. 

For a majority of his career he divided his time between academic administration, health services and preparedness research and clinical practice as a physician assistant in both orthopedic and neurological spine surgery and the management of pain and complex pain syndromes. 

Trained as a Physician Assistant at Duke University, he earned a BS degree in Medical Sciences from Alderson Broaddus College and a MS degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. 

Mr. Stanhope is an avid collector of 18th and 19th C. Oriental woodblocks and enjoys fly fishing, gardening and is in the process of remodeling his home.
