Course Description:
This course provides an overview of strategies for and challenges to planning for all types of disasters. All phases of the emergency management model will be addressed: mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery. Content includes tools and resources needed to develop and/or evaluate a facility or community all-hazards response plan and create exercises to test this plan. |
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course a student will be able to:
• Specify the four phases of emergency management and activities involved in each phase
• Describe the roles and capacity of various emergency response personnel/agencies
• Explain the Incident Command and National Incident Management Systems
• Specify challenges to the development and implementation of shelters and alternate care sites during a disaster
• Describe the components of a disaster plan
• Assess scenarios for disaster exercises
• Describe how to evaluate a facility or community all-hazards response plan using disaster exercises |
Competencies covered by this course:
• Describe the public health role in emergency response in a range of emergencies
• Describe the chain of command in emergency response
• Explain the Integrated Emergency Management System
• Describe the roles and capacity of various emergency response personnel/agencies
• Identify components of an emergency response plan
• Develop and evaluate emergency response plan through drills and exercises
• Demonstrate the ability to develop a community-wide tabletop exercise that involves participation from a variety of responding agency representatives, and includes evaluation and assessment.
• Recognize the multi-disciplinary nature of the response to and recovery from a disaster and explain some of the public health challenges
• Recognize unusual events that might indicate emergencies and describe appropriate action |
