WebCT

http://webct.slu.edu is your link to all issues related to WebCT while studying with us at Saint Louis University.

If you are having problems with WebCT, please contact your professor or send an e-mail with your name, username, course information (name, number, section number and instructor's name) to webct@slu.edu.

Computing requirements

Every student in the program should have access to a PC running the Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 98 or better) or the Macintosh operating system (MacOS 9.0 or better).

WebCT uses your browser to display information and interact with you. Internet Explorer works well and is recommended however the newer versions of Netscape (7.0 or better), Mozilla's Firefox, and Apple's Safari will also work.

We highly recommend that students use a broadband connection such as a DSL, cable modem, or LAN while taking these courses. A dial up modem will work but we cannot guarantee that all of the content will get to the users in a reasonable amount of time with a dial up modem.

Each student should have Microsoft Office on their computer to open documents. (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint minimum). We will also be using Adobe Acrobat "pdf" files frequently and therefore require at least Acrobat Reader which can be dowloaded for free from Adobe.

Note: As a student enrolled at St. Louis University, you may purchase Microsoft software at a significant discount.

How I do know what class(es) to take?
Follow the Advisement Form given to you by your Advisor or that is listed on the Institute for Biosecurity’s website http://bioterrorism.slu.edu/MS_ProgramLaunch/LaunchMS_program.htm. Be sure you are using the correct form for the semester in which you began the program. This information is listed on the bottom right-hand corner of the form.

Are there any pre-requisites for the Biosecurity classes?
Some classes do have pre-requisites. Pre-requisites are listed in the graduate school catalog and on the Institute for Biosecurity’s website http://bioterrorism.slu.edu/MS_ProgramLaunch/LaunchMS_program.htm.

Can the pre-requisites for a course ever be overridden?

In some cases, the instructor for a course can override the need for pre-requisites. This is done on a case-by-case basis.

Does the University have a toll free phone number?
The toll free number for SLU is 1 (800) 758-3678. You must ask for the extension or person with whom you wish to speak. When you call the toll free number, a general SLU operator will answer and students can be forwarded/transferred to any department or faculty/staff listed in the SLU directory. Therefore, you could be transferred to the Bursar’s Office, Financial Aid, library, etc.

What is WebCT?
WebCT is an online program that students use to access information, posted by their professors, for their classes. Some highlights of WebCT that can be used by your professors are:

        1. Class syllabus
        2. Class Assignments
        3. Online class discussions
        4. Class Calendar
        5. Email
        6. And much more

Can I take a semester off and still be in the program?
After being admitted to a SLU graduate program, students must maintain continuous enrollment in order to hold their place in their degree or certificate program. If you do not maintain continuous enrollment, you will be dropped from the SLU system and need to reapply and be re-admitted. Students may take up to two semesters off without losing their position in the MS or Graduate certificate in Biosecurity & Disaster Preparedness program, but they must enroll in a zero (0) credit hour course for the semesters in which they are not enrolled in a credit-hour courses. The zero (0) credit hour course acts as a placeholder for your position in the program. Students may enroll in the zero (0) credit hour course in either the fall or spring semester. Students may take off the summer semester without enrolling in the zero (0) credit hour course because the summer semester does not count in the continuous enrollment policy. If you choose to skip a semester, you must inform your Advisor and register for zero (0) credit hours to remain in the program.

Where is the list of classes offered by the Institute for Biosecurity?
A list of core and elective courses offered by the Institute for Biosecurity is available online at: http://bioterrorism.slu.edu/MS_ProgramLaunch/LaunchMS_program.htm Courses are also listed in the SLU School of Public Health’s Catalog, available at: http://publichealth.slu.edu/

Where is the list of graduate classes offered by SLU?

There is a $1.50 charge to have one mailed to you. Please make a check payable to Saint Louis University with your request in writing to the Graduate School Admissions Office. Can I transfer in credits from another University?
According to Saint Louis University Graduate School policy, students may petition to have graduate-level course credits transferred in, but only after the student has completed one semester (or 6 credits) at SLU and with the approval of the program’s Director, Dr Greg Evans. Students may transfer in up to 6 credits (2 classes), but there are restrictions.

If you wish to apply for the transfer of graduate credits, a copy of the syllabus or other course materials that describe the content provided in the course you wish to have transferred in should be sent (by email, mail, or fax) to the Associate Director of Curricular Affairs, Terri Rebmann. Dr Evans and Dr Rebmann will look over the materials and decide if it is comparable to one of the program’s courses or if it could be used as one of your electives. If Drs Evans and Rebmann approve the content, the student then petitions to have the credits transferred in at the end of the semester when the student has successfully completed 6 credits at SLU. The full SLU graduate school policy on transferring credits and the petition form can be found at the SLU Graduate School website: http://www.slu.edu/graduate/students.html (click on “Forms and Petitions”).
