Welcome to the
Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness Programs

Offered through the Institute for Biosecurity (formerly the Center for the Study of Bioterrorism & Emerging Infections), these programs are designed to meet the growing need of public health professionals, physicians, physician assistants, nurses, veterinarians, emergency management professionals, corporate security and health personnel, law enforcement, and related professionals.

These programs focus on skills required to be a biosecurity professional, which encompasses the fields of homeland security and consequences management of pandemics. The biosecurity area is likely the most rapidly growing discipline in public health and homeland security.

Students may participate at one of three levels:

1. Master of Science Degree in Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness - This 35 credit hour Master in Science program is taught entirely using distance technology through the School of Public Health at Saint Louis University, a fully accredited school of public health. The degree can be completed in two years if two courses are completed each semester. The MS degree is targeted to non-traditional working students who wish to take advantage of the distance-learning format. Successful students in this program are self-directed, motivated adult learners who are critical thinkers and who can work independently in a non-traditional environment. Distance technology permits a student to decide when they will study and how long it will take them to get their degree.

2. Master of Public Health, with a concentration area in Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness - This 48 credit hour Master in Public Health program is a hybrid program, with classes provided both on campus and through distance technology. Two semesters (15 credit hours) of residency for full-time students are required, as well as a Practice Experience (which is similar to an internship). The program is provided through the School of Public Health at Saint Louis University, a fully accredited school of public health. The degree can be completed in two years if two courses are completed each semester. More information on the MPH degree can be found on the Saint Louis University School of Public Health website: http://publichealth.slu.edu/programs/mph/biosecurity.html
