Frequently Asked Questions
Tuition

Tuition for graduate level coursework is set by the Graduate School at Saint Louis University.

Tuition information can be found here.

Computing requirements

Every student in the program should have access to a PC running the Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 98 or better) or the Macintosh operating system (MacOS 9.0 or better).

Blackboard uses your browser to display information and interact with you. Internet Explorer works well and is recommended however the newer versions of Netscape (7.0 or better), Mozilla's Firefox, and Apple's Safari will also work.

We highly recommend that students use a broadband connection such as a DSL, cable modem, or LAN while taking these courses. A dial up modem will work but we cannot guarantee that all of the content will get to the users in a reasonable amount of time with a dial up modem.

Each student should have Microsoft Office on their computer to open documents. (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint minimum). We will also be using Adobe Acrobat "pdf" files frequently and therefore require at least Acrobat Reader which can be dowloaded for free from Adobe.

Note: As a student enrolled at St. Louis University, you may purchase Microsoft software at a significant discount.

Does the University have a toll free phone number?

Can I take a semester off and still be in the program?
After being admitted to a SLU graduate program, students must maintain continuous enrollment in order to hold their place in their degree or certificate program. If you do not maintain continuous enrollment, you will be dropped from the SLU system and need to reapply and be re-admitted. Students may take up to two semesters off without losing their position in the MS or Graduate certificate in Biosecurity & Disaster Preparedness program, but they must enroll in a zero (0) credit hour course for the semesters in which they are not enrolled in a credit-hour courses. The zero (0) credit hour course acts as a placeholder for your position in the program. Students may enroll in the zero (0) credit hour course in either the fall or spring semester. Students may take off the summer semester without enrolling in the zero (0) credit hour course because the summer semester does not count in the continuous enrollment policy. If you choose to skip a semester, you must inform your Advisor and register for zero (0) credit hours to remain in the program.

Can I transfer in credits from another University?
According to Saint Louis University Graduate School policy, students may petition to have graduate-level course credits transferred in, but only after the student has completed one semester (or 6 credits) at SLU and with the approval of the program’s Director, Dr Greg Evans. Students may transfer in up to 6 credits (2 classes), but there are restrictions.

If you wish to apply for the transfer of graduate credits, a copy of the syllabus or other course materials that describe the content provided in the course you wish to have transferred in should be sent (by email, mail, or fax) to the Associate Director of Curricular Affairs, Terri Rebmann. Dr Evans and Dr Rebmann will look over the materials and decide if it is comparable to one of the program’s courses or if it could be used as one of your electives. If Drs Evans and Rebmann approve the content, the student then petitions to have the credits transferred in at the end of the semester when the student has successfully completed 6 credits at SLU. The full SLU graduate school policy on transferring credits and the petition form can be found at the SLU Graduate School website: http://www.slu.edu/graduate/students.html (click on “Forms and Petitions”).

We aspire to bridge the gap between your home country and the United States by being your initial contact and remaining a point of reference while you study and work at the University. What is a CRN and where do I find them?
CRN stands for “Course Registration Number”. It is the number assigned to each course for registration purposes. It is not the same as the course number. Course numbers are preceded by the department abbreviations, such as EOH for classes offered by the division of Environmental and Organizational Health.  All Biosecurity courses are offered through the department of Environmental and Organizational Health in the School of Public Health. You may look up a course CRN by searching the “Subject” field within Banner. CRNs are also listed in the graduate catalog that is available online at the School of Public Health website: http://publichealth.slu.edu/
